A Push-to-Talk Android

The first Android phone with push-to-talk walkie-talkie capability will become available from Boost Mobile, the prepaid phone arm of Sprint, on Sunday. The phone, made by Motorola, will be sold only at Boost Mobile stores and at Best Buy. Prices will vary by store; Boost is pricing them between $350 and $400.

How Non-Profits Should Approach Making iPhone Apps

by Geoff Livingston on Jun 19, 2010

Much has been said about Apple’s policy barring iPhone and iPad application donations. The company cannot guarantee donations will be received by said non-profit, and as a result, donations to charities cannot be mentioned in any Apple application description, support materials, or the application itself. Certainly, this impacts the ability of non-profits and cause applications to collect donations. But how much?

Next Generation of Droid Smartphones Coming Next Week From Verizon and Motorola

Motorola's Droid is the best-selling Android phone ever--it even reached the million-sold mark faster than the iPhone--and Verizon is set to announce the follow-up next week, on June 23rd. Verizon owns (or at least rents from George Lucas) the "Droid" name, and it doesn't seem to be manufacturer-specific. HTC's Droid Incredible (essentially an HTC Sense version of the Google Nexus One) also carries the Droid name, for one. But this invitation notes that the new devices will be introduced by Verizon, Google, Adobe, and Motorola, so we can expect another Moto phone (or two).

iPhone Multitasking "Delay" Is Real, But Misleading

Multitasking is coming to the iPhone in just a smattering of days as part of the new iOS4 operating system. But it requires some re-programming on behalf of any app that needs to use it. Need we worry that app writers won't be ready in time?

What’s Missing From iPhone 4 Is Part Of What Makes It Great

On Monday, Apple officially unveiled the iPhone 4. After playing around with it for 20 minutes or so after the keynote, I can safely say that it’s the most impressive mobile device I’ve ever seen. But plenty of people (many of which have never used the phone) disagree. Their arguments are mainly predicated on what Apple didn’t include rather than what it did.

Don’t Buy The HTC EVO, It Is A Seriously Flawed Device

Let’s start things off with a disclaimer – I love Android phones. Last year I left the iPhone and switched to Android largely because of the amazing usefulness of Google Voice, and only Android devices truly let you take over your phone with a Google Voice app and have the perfect experience. I have extensively tested nearly all Android phones to date.

An iPhone Lover’s (Initial) Thoughts On iPhone 4

This morning, my colleague Jason Kincaid wrote a very good and very level-headed post about the new iPhone (and the new iOS 4 software) from the perspective of an Android user. I’m going to come at it from the other angle.

Smartphone OS Stats Show Android Users Love Their Phones, but iPhoners Love Theirs More

Nielsen's smartphone numbers show a lot of interesting and often unexpected findings in demographics. (Though not sales--iPhone's still drastically outselling everyone but BlackBerry in the States.) Despite the hypermasculine branding of the country's most popular Android phone (the Motorola Droid) which was expected to appeal mostly to young men, the gender split is about equal among Android and iPhone users. In fact, while both platforms skew male, Android is slightly more female-heavy than iPhone.
